About me (technical):
I have been programming since the 1970's; feeding marked cards through a reader to an acoustic coupler and watching the dot matrix printer whine results on wide green & white stiped perforated paper. Graphics were ASCII character maps!
I have kept my brain in the game mostly solving PostScript printing problems in electronic prepress arenas in the printing industry. The focus being page layout, file conversions, font management, design, PDF creation, and trapping for offset printing. There is still a bit of scripting (QuarkXpress XData, Acrobat PittStop actions and forms, PhotoShop actions, some PHP, AppleScript, and the occasional DOS Batch file) to be found. I have had the opportunity to dabble in networking, building computers, and beta testing software over the years.
About the site and code:
Why did I get a Web site and name it Quarkist.com?
QuarkXPress is a page layout program I have used daily since 1990. A quark is a subatomic particle with a mass and a force which carries a spin...kind of like organized religion I would say. I like the duality of the meaning and how they both fit for me.
I worked very hard to make the code comply with all browsers and deprecate gracefully (so older browsers would still be able to navigate the site). This turned out to be a much greater challenge than I had anticipated.
It was fun and challenging. However, I am glad to shift gears to using it as a vehicle rather than continuing to develop the chassis.
About me (personal):
I have been drawn to philosophy, quantum theory (the relationship of energy and matter), spirituality, social and political issues since I can remember. I love how all of these concepts boil down to the 2 basic questions we all have in common: Who am I? Where am I going?
Who am I? Who are we as a community? A society? Culture? Nation? Species?
I love that how we choose to express our ideas directly impacts the world around us.
I believe as a whole we are a young tribe in the universe just realizing that we need to feed and care for each other.
Today there is such vast disparity between cultures. Hundreds of millions of people struggle with basics of food and health care while our governments create strong armies and bombs to keep us safe from those that want what we have or fear who they think we are.
I believe we are all one in a very real sense. I believe it is time for our planet to come to peace and reason. It is time for our species to embrace the humanity that is our potential. Our potential is without limit. That is where I am going.
