Special Character Codes

Some characters will not display properly in Web browsers without the use of special formatting codes.

There are two ways to format special characters: Character codes and Numeric codes.

Character Codes

Not every character has a unique character code. Only the most common are listed below.

The format for character codes is as follows:

• Character code for a quotation mark: " displays as "
• & - Amperstand character
• quot - The unique character code
• ; - Semicolon

The most common are:

Numeric Codes

Every character does have a unique numeric code.

The format for numeric codes is similar to the character codes above:

• Numeric code for a quotation mark: &34; displays as "
• & - Amperstand character
• # - Number (or pound) sign
• 34 - The unique character code
• ; - Semicolon
